Prompts to Slow Down + Create
Seven prompts for finding stillness in order to let the creativity flow.
Written by Rach Taylor.
A creative is someone who sees the world differently and uses their imagination to shape ideas, objects or experiences in new ways. Every single body is a creative.
This past four weeks have been.....well, manic. The brand launch coincided with my daughter finishing infant school and what has unfolded is a seemingly never-ending waltz of play rehearsals, beach trips, sports days, play dates...you name it, it's happening. Now whilst this is a wonderful experience for her, it has left myself and her dad spinning — eeking out time from the smallest of spaces to create work we are proud of, it's a job alright. So this month's prompts delve into your reality and where your quiet moments reside. Maybe you already know. Maybe, as we speak, you are throwing your hands in the air in despair and declaring "I literally have NO time". Use these prompts to check in with your creative-self, you don't know until you know, ya know?
Here is how it works. These prompts are an opportunity to make the abstract tangible. They encourage you to identify and process your life in order to let ideas unfold and grow. This is a chance to observe yourself, sometimes the most obvious sits quietly, right under our noses.
Take one prompt per day or work on them all together. Write down your musings, talk about them over dinner or just mull them over - there is no wrong way. One day, one prompt, might just change up your world.
1. Me-time
After 10pm, with candles burning and a herbal tea. As the sun rises and the coffee flows. Describe a time recently when you have felt most creatively alive?
2. The presence present
The Love Island manosphere, the polaroid comeback, Oasis reuniting in their home town - what cultural phenomenons are captivating you this week?
3. Subtle moments
What is an off-beat moment that sparks a mad rush of creativity for you? It might be 10,000ft in the air, staring out of an airplane window. Perhaps, during the endorphin rush of a soul cycle session. Maybe you catch ideas amongst the falling water of the shower.
4. Weekly wonderings
Can you pinpoint a moment in your week where you could you eek out space for stillness and see what ideas come to you?
5. Time thief
Is there anything that you do that you could do without? What voices, activities or influence could you leave behind?
6. Right your wrongs
Cooking from scratch, going for a run, catch up with friends. Can you think of something that you love doing but rush every….single…time. How can you draw out this magic moment? What is the longest possible time it could take? Do it.
7. Look back
What are you reminiscing on right now? Unpack a moment in your life you are currently travelling back to.
And for extra points...
The weekly check in
Muse on your last week and see if anything unexpected comes to light or perhaps everything is as you thought. Note down a fragrance, sight, word, feeling and sound that is currently manifesting as your present.
